Meet O.B.I. Contender Bob Grice

April 27, 2022

Meet Bob

You may remember Bob from my wedding, or bachelor party or that drunken night at Larry’s house when we played slap the bag and he started singing 80s hits by Starship. But if you dont know him, let me introduce you to the enigma that is Robert Grice.

Bob is one of my oldest friends, we played basketball and baseball together for our High School. We also competed at everything, and had epic (at least by our standards) battles 1:1 basketball, or teamed up in 2:2 basketball, in ping pong, Nba Jam, and the classic N64 Game goldeneye. We also had crushes on the same girl, I took her to homecoming, he married her.

Bob up 1.

Golf Beginnings

With every end, there is a new beginning, and such is the case with Bob and my “Golf Career”.

The spring of our Junior year, we were playing on the HS baseball team. Midway through the season, we were fed up with the seniority and favoritism on the team, so after one particular game, we handed in our uniforms, walked out and never looked back.

With the newly found free time, Bob and his dad treated me like one of their family and would take me to the range and the executive course and thus began this journey in Golf that has in so many ways shaped my life, taking me coast to coast, to different jobs and in an indirect way to Colorado.

Through the early years Bob was far better than me in every aspect of golf… except driving distance.

We eventually both went to the university of maryland and our senior year played a lot of golf. The 18th was a wide open 450+ yard par 4, and I would inevitably out drive him every time, even though he continued to beat me in scoring.

We had an ongoing joke that turned into a contest, with me holding the trophy (yes an actual trophy) and the title of “The Manliest” when all was said and done. Cruz wins that round.

All Square.

Manliest Trophy

Who wins?

As the years progressed and my game started to improve, we’ve played friendly matches against each other, been teamed up on a few of bobs local buddies trips, but never have we done a destination trip championship together,  and certainly not when our abilities were closely matched.

This years OBI is an opportunity to break the tie, only time will tell who comes out on top.

Bob's Game

If you are matched up against Bob, here's the 411

Strengths

  • Well rounded game, no true skill based weaknesses
  • Creativity around the greens
  • When the putter is hot, its hot.

Weaknesses

  • Can have difficulty maintaining or finding his performance alcohol level (PAL). So buy him that extra shot of fireball (or 2) if you're down at the turn
  • He’ll be the most jet lagged person on the trip, lets be honest these trips are not conducive to recovery. Bunch of out of shape drunk dudes snoring making it difficult for your bunkmate to sleep.

What's in the Bag

Bob plays what works, he's not loyal to one brand (side note , thats so not my style)

  • Driver: Ping G410 LST(set to fade... someones afraid of the ol hooky)
  • Fairway: 3W Ping G410
  • Irons: 3-P Callaway Apex Pro '21
  • Wedges: Vokey 54 F grind, Vokey 60 Custom Wedgeworks
  • Putter: An Original 07 Odyssey DFX 2ball blade
  • Ball: Taylormade TP5x or Tour Response
